This week we had 2 day trips. Wednesday we went up to Dover & Canterbury and Friday we went to Cambridge. So we get to the Dover Castle-get out of the bus, its raining and the castle is closed! I guess our appointment was scheduled for a different day or something but it was pretty funny/sad. We take pix outside of the gate but it was kind of a bummer we didn’t get to explore around it.
Then we went to the white cliffs of Dover, which were really pretty-despite the mist and fog-oh London! It was neat to be right up at the English Channel and see all the rocks & the waves against the shore. If only it was spring/summer time…
Next up we drove over to Canterbury. First we explored around the cute city a little bit and then we toured the Canterbury Cathedral. This cathedral is where Thomas Beckett was murdered. Beckett craved power and eventually King Henry II had his men kill him-kind of creepy. But the cathedral was full of gothic architecture and beautiful stained glass. I swear I will never get over how amazing and detailed the stained glass in cathedrals are.
Friday we went to Cambridge and honestly I feel ignorant to say it but I didn’t realize what a huge community/institution Cambridge is. Just a few fun facts about the University of Cambridge:
-it is the 2nd oldest university in England-next to Oxford, built in 1209 by scholars leaving Oxford
-it currently has 31 colleges
-there are approximately 17,200 students & 1500 teaching staff.
-the cost for tuition for in state is $6,000-$8,000 but out of state is A LOT higher (for grad school almost $94,000-so guess I won't be going there for grad school!)
-John Harvard graduated from Cambridge in 1632
So some highlight activities in Cambridge included: going through Kings College, watching fudge making, shopping & getting some Oxford gear, punting along the river Cam, oh and freezing my toes off! It was a great day though and I loved the whole atmosphere and history of Cambridge.
